I couldn't agree more. I have found by far my best bet for <strong>really</strong> learning math is to teach myself from books.

I've been really enjoying <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Head-First-Algebra-Learners-Guide/dp/0596514867/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1277906985&sr=8-1" rel="nofollow">Head First Algebra</a> by O'Reilly.

Now I need them to publish a Head First Guide to Calculus and I'll be all set :)

Recently I have been dabbling in the stock market. The long and arduous journey has lasted several years and many equations. The problem is not you! Equations, notations, format and interpretation vary more widely than is practical. PHD's in the same field use different notation and different format for expressing common mathematical properties! It is pure madness! So do not take your inability to solve these problems as anything but a sign that you are unable to parse garbage. :) I tend to think, however, that if you had the right tutor (as I did) that you could figure out the proper keys to understanding your equations! Gaining this understanding for me was the key to success.
Good luck in your endevour. If they give out points for life experience, you should have at least three PHDs by now.

Hi Susan.

Did you read the update and click the "over *here*" link? There's quite a bit more detail there including the answer to the question.

Cool. Plurk looks neat, but part of what makes Twitter useful is its universality.

Exactly as you said, part of what motivates me to use it is the fact that, while I'm getting updates from my friends about what they're eating for lunch today, I'm also getting updates from some truly hardcore geeks around the world about whatever's on their mind at the moment, and that's priceless.

Part of what motivated me to write this article is that Facebook has explicit provisions for turning *off* all the game spam, and selectively filtering out what you have zero interest in.

While hash tags in Twitter do kinda sorta not really the same thing, they're far less efficient and all encompassing, and I find it annoying to essentially force people to use clients that have filtering just to hide what I see as nothing but noise.

So by all means, have fun throwing snowballs, planting little green thingamabobs, and sending drinks to your friends, just do it on Facebook where I can patently ignore it if I want :)

I know some folks who use Facebook only for the games. :)

I've been playing around with Plurk (http://www.plurk.com) a bit lately, and it's fun, but not many people use it (and I haven't found any publicly well-known folks there as yet to follow- they're all using Twitter).
